Assistant Arts Professor of Dance History

New York University/ Tisch School of the Arts Department of Dance seeks to fill a full-time Assistant Arts Professor position in Dance History to begin in Fall 2019. This is a multiyear, non-tenure track appointment, renewable based on performance. Consistently recognized as one of the nation’s leading dance departments, the Department of Dance offers a spectrum of courses integrating artistic process and intellectual enrichment, with a focus on technique, performance, and dance composition. The Department of Dance faculty is comprised of performing arts professionals who maintain a supportive atmosphere of collaboration and continuing artistic achievement.

Responsibilities include: instruction in graduate and undergraduate Dance History including World Dance, Western Dance History, and other Undergraduate and Graduate seminars. Professors are expected to maintain ongoing professional, creative and research work. Additional responsibilities may include: departmental, school and university service, student advising, dance concert mentoring and supervision, and other administrative responsibilities as designated by the Department’s leadership.
The candidate should demonstrate significant previous teaching experience and scholarship related to the field of dance. Previous work in a performing arts department at the university level is preferred.

We seek a creative individual who is committed to developing ongoing relationships with the professional field locally, nationally and internationally. Faculty and students value an interdisciplinary perspective and an active interest in creative and scholarly investigations in dance. We encourage applicants who will add a significant artistic voice to our curriculum and faculty and who foster a broad, relevant perspective of Dance History including world dance traditions.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Tisch School of the Arts Department of Dance at New York University consistently ranks as one of the top programs in the country. The department, a three-year BFA program and a three-year dual degree MA/MFA program, is comprised of approximately 125 students. We offer intense training for students committed to their futures as internationally acclaimed dancers and choreographers.

Courses include training in contemporary dance, traditional ballet, and choreography, as well as theory, composition, kinesiology, dance science, history of dance, music, acting and dance, and new media, all taught in a challenging, yet nurturing, environment. The Tisch interdisciplinary philosophy approaches the training of the dancer as a thinking, creative artist and allows for numerous opportunities to collaborate with musicians, designers, and media artists throughout Tisch. Tisch dancers graduate with physical virtuosity and the experience of groundbreaking performance work; they are ready to impact the globe as fearless artists.

QUALIFICATIONS: MFA degree or equivalent professional experience in teaching at graduate and Undergraduate levels.
