General Director, Charlottesville Opera

Charlottesville Opera invites applications and referrals for the position of General Director.

For more than 40 years Charlottesville Opera has produced opera, music theatre, and other musical performances. Originally the company produced its performances at Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of President James Monroe. In 2009 the season was relocated to the historic Paramount Theatre on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall (seating capacity: 1041). In 2017, the company changed its name from Ash Lawn Opera to Charlottesville Opera. The annual budget is approximately $800,000.

The General Director will have overall accountability for all aspects of Charlottesville Opera, both artistically and administratively. The ideal candidate will have senior management experience in the opera/cultural field, a proven record of success in fundraising with both annual fund and major gifts, and the ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers, including the Board of Directors. Training in opera/music and/or arts management is required, as well as a good contact network throughout the opera industry. Experience with a festival operation would be desirable.

Please send resume, cover letter, salary requirements and references by November 9, 2018 to:
